HOW DARE YOU? (Futsū no kodomo, Ō Mipo, 2025)

Uno dei lavori più originali usciti lo scorso anno nell’arcipelago, How Dare You? riesce a bilanciare tematiche pressanti quali la crisi climatica con una leggerezza di tocco che incarna in maniera delicata e pregnante la percezione ed esperienza del mondo dei più piccoli. 

Yuishi è un ragazzino un po’ maldestro ma molto curioso, con una grande passione per gli insetti; Kokoa è una sua compagna di classe sensibile ai temi ecologici, che vede in Greta Thunberg un modello da seguire. Infine c’è Haruto, il ragazzo più irrequieto e temuto della scuola, per il quale Kokoa ha un debole. I tre decidono di collaborare in una serie di iniziative volte a sensibilizzare il quartiere sulle conseguenze della crisi climatica. Convinti di poter cambiare le cose, mettono in atto piccoli gesti di protesta e disobbedienza che, nelle loro intenzioni, dovrebbero scuotere la coscienza degli adulti. 

Dopo essersi imposta all’attenzione del panorama cinematografico giapponese nel 2014 con il notevole The Light Shines Only There (Soko nomi nite hikari kagayaku), Ō Mipo si era allontanata per un certo periodo dai set, anche a causa della nascita del figlio. Tornata a dirigere un lungometraggio nel 2024 con Living in Two Worlds (Boku ga ikiteru, futatsu no sekai) la regista di origini coreane continua il suo originale percorso artistico con una storia ambientata nel mondo dell’infanzia. Tra i molti i film che ruotano attorno alle esperienze dei più piccoli, sono relativamente rari quelli capaci di restituire con autenticità e sensibilità poetica l’universo dei bambini e How Dare You? è uno di questi. Un appunto sul titolo internazionale e sul poster usato: entrambi sono scelte poco riuscite che fanno un cattivo servizio, in termini di comunicazione, al lungometraggio, il cui titolo originale è Futsū no kodomo (“Un bambino comune”), e non rendono giustizia alla delicatezza e alle tematiche dell’opera.

Uno dei maggiori meriti della regista e dello sceneggiatore Takada Ryō consiste nell’aver costruito un racconto leggero e spesso divertente, capace però di porre interrogativi essenziali ai quali il mondo degli adulti fatica a dare risposte convincenti. Ancora più importante è la scelta di raccontare gli eventi attraverso la sensibilità dei protagonisti: immagini, suoni e punti di vista riflettono costantemente il modo in cui i bambini percepiscono la realtà, in particolare quello di Yuishi. In questo senso, il lungometraggio si inserisce nella lunga tradizione del cinema giapponese che ha fatto dell’infanzia uno dei suoi temi privilegiati, da Shimizu Hiroshi a Hani Susumu fino a Kore-eda Hirokazu.

L’equilibrio tra leggerezza narrativa e consapevolezza delle emergenze ambientali è sostenuto anche da un uso particolarmente efficace della colonna sonora. Determinante è inoltre la prova di Shimada Tetta nei panni di Yuishi. Il giovane protagonista riesce a incarnare un personaggio goffo, talvolta egoista, ma sempre sincero e profondamente umano; un bambino forse più interessato alla compagna di classe che alle questioni ecologiche, ma proprio per questo estremamente credibile. Attorno a lui ruota l’intero universo del film. La naturalezza delle interpretazioni deriva anche dal lungo lavoro preparatorio svolto dalla regista e dallo sceneggiatore insieme ai giovani attori attraverso una serie di workshop, che hanno contribuito a rendere spontanei dialoghi e comportamenti dei tre piccoli protagonisti.

Anche i personaggi adulti, pur restando sullo sfondo di una vicenda dominata dallo sguardo dei più piccoli, lasciano il segno e si inseriscono alla perfezione nella trama del lungometraggio. In un mondo dove le figure maschili appaiono spesso assenti o inadeguate, emergono in particolare le interpretazioni di Aoi Yū nel ruolo della madre di Yuishi e di Takiuchi Kumi in quello della madre di Kokoa. Quest’ultima compare soltanto nella parte finale del film, ma regala una performance tanto realistica quanto irresistibilmente comica.

English Review

One of the most original films to emerge from Japan last year, How Dare You? manages to balance urgent themes such as the climate crisis with a lightness of touch that delicately yet powerfully captures the way children perceive and experience the world.

Yuishi is a clumsy but endlessly curious boy with a passion for insects. Kokoa is his classmate, deeply concerned about environmental issues and with Greta Thunberg as a role model. Then there is Haruto, the most unruly and feared boy at school, for whom Kokoa secretly has a soft spot. The three decide to join forces in a series of initiatives aimed at raising awareness in their neighborhood about the consequences of climate change. Convinced that they can make a difference, they engage in small acts of protest and civil disobedience that, in their minds, will awaken the conscience of the adults around them.

After earning critical acclaim in 2014 with The Light Shines Only There (Soko nomi nite hikari kagayaku), director Ō Mipo stepped away from filmmaking for several years, partly due to the birth of her child. Returning to feature directing in 2024 with Living in Two Worlds (Boku ga ikiteru, futatsu no sekai), the Japanese-Korean filmmaker continues her artistic journey with a story centered on childhood. Films centered on children’s experiences are hardly uncommon, yet works capable of conveying the emotional and imaginative universe of childhood with genuine authenticity and poetic sensitivity remain relatively rare. How Dare You? is one of them. A brief note on the poster and the international title: both are rather unfortunate choices that do the film a disservice. The original title, Futsū no kodomo (“An Ordinary Child”), is far more fitting and better reflects the work’s delicate tone and thematic concerns.

One of the most impressive aspects of the film is the way Ō and screenwriter Takada Ryō craft a story that is light-hearted and often comical, while also posing essential questions for which the adult world has few convincing answers. Equally important is their decision to tell the story through the sensibilities of its young protagonists: the film’s images, sounds, and perspectives consistently reflect the way children perceive reality, particularly through Yuishi’s eyes. Seen from this perspective, How Dare You? stands firmly within the long tradition of Japanese cinema that has made childhood one of its most enduring subjects, from Hiroshi Shimizu and Susumu Hani to Hirokazu Kore-eda.

The film’s balance between narrative lightness and its awareness of environmental issues is complemented by the effective use of the music. Equally important is Shimada Tetta’s performance as Yuishi. The young actor brings warmth and authenticity to a character who is awkward and occasionally selfish, yet always sincere and deeply human, a boy perhaps more interested in his classmate than in ecological issues, and all the more believable for it. The film’s world revolves around him.

The naturalness of the kids’ performances also owes much to the extensive preparation carried out by Ō and Takada with the young cast through a series of workshops. These sessions helped make the dialogue and interactions of the three protagonists feel genuine and unforced, adding greatly to the film’s charm.
Although the adult characters remain in the background of a story largely shaped by the perspective of its young protagonists, they nevertheless leave a strong impression and are woven seamlessly into the narrative. In a world where male figures are often absent, ineffectual, or emotionally distant, particularly memorable are Aoi Yū as Yuishi’s mother and Takiuchi Kumi as Kokoa’s mother. The latter appears only in the film’s final act, yet delivers a performance that is as true-to-life as it is irresistibly funny.
