“Tutto è possibile in un film.” INTERVISTA A TOYODA TOSHIAKI

Outsiders: Pornostar – Blue Spring – 9 Souls

Question 1

Sonatine. “They’re useless… Nobody needs yakuza” (Arano in Pornostar). This quote by Arano, repeated like a mantra in Pornostar, emphasizes the uselessness of the yakuza. On the other hand, the old boss argues that, without it, chaos and anarchy would reign. Does Arano embody a new course? Is he the “new” against the “old”?

“They’re useless… Nobody needs yakuza” (Arano in Pornostar).

Toyoda. The violence symbolized by the Yakuza will not disappear. Violence has no end. It has been that way since man was born.

Question 2

Sonatine. The outsider protagonists of your first trilogy are on the sidelines of both the classic institutions – which are an expression of the state, such as the school in Blue Spring and the prison in 9 Souls – and the yakuza “institution”, which is an expression of crime. What is your concept of “institution”?

Toyoda. I consider all institutions, states, laws and systems useless. They were created 150 years ago by stupid people. This is the story of Japan. I like things like primitive tribal precepts.

Mi piacciono cose come i precetti tribali primitivi.

Dysfunctional families: Hanging Garden / Famiglie disfunzionali: Hanging Garden

Question 3

Sonatine. The saying of the Kyobashi family is “We never conceal the truth, no subject is taboo. We try to share everything with each other.” It is obviously ironic…

Il motto della famiglia Kyobashi è “We never conceal the truth no subject is taboo. We try to share everything with each other.”

Toyoda. It is both ironic and an ideal that I wish were true. When people start a family, they always have an ideal. I don’t think that is wrong.

Question 4

Sonatine. After three films dedicated to “misfits” and after the public institutions of school and prison, with Hanging Garden you turned your gaze to the “dysfunctional family”, which is always an institution, but a private one. Do you agree on this point?

Sei d’accordo?

Toyoda. That is one perspective. I had been working on a story about a pseudo-family in which strangers become friends at school or in prison. So it was natural for me to depict a real family in Hanging Garden. I had been thinking about the difficulty of family relationships for a long time.

Question 5

Sonatine. Critics consider this fourth film of yours a turning point for both the choice of pop star Koizumi Kyōko (who, by the way, already had a small role in Blue Spring, where she played the kiosk woman) and for the more mature look and the bigger production commitment (you had a budget of 3 million US dollars). Was that a turning point for you?

Toyoda. The production cost was not much different from that of 9soul. The turning point was that we made a film about women. It was a turning point for me because all I had made were men’s films. Making a film about a woman, and the fact that it turned out to be a good film, gave me a lot of confidence.

After the exile: The Blood of Rebirth (Yomigaeri no chi)

Dopo l’esilio: The Blood of Rebirth (Yomigaeri no chi)

Question 6

Sonatine. Between Hanging Garden and The Blood of Rebirth, 4 long years passed: how did you live that period?  Did you move away from Tokyo and cinema, or did cinema rather put you on a black list?

Tra Hanging Garden e The Blood of Rebirth passano 4 lunghissimi anni: come hai vissuto quel periodo?

Toyoda. I could not make a film for four years. Since my probation was four years, the film company was afraid to finance a film during that time. For four years, I lived deep in the mountains, wrote new movie scripts, shot music videos, played with musicians, went to foreign film festivals, and went straight to wandering abroad. I was never invited to Italy. The film I wrote then had a big budget. However, it was canceled a month before crank-in. That was a shock. I tried to revive from that and shot The Blood of Resurrection in 10 days.

Ho cercato di rivivere da quello e ho girato The Blood of Resurrection in 10 giorni.

Question 7

Sonatine. You returned to cinema with low-budget projects: was it a bit like starting over again, a rebirth (“yomigaeri”, rebirth)?

Toyoda. I was full of anger and vengeance.I thought that such energy would be the power of resurrection.

Question 8

Sonatine. The Blood of Rebirth seems to attest that, after falling down, we get up again through sacrifice, diving in blood like Oguri who, after reaching a magical pool full of red water, finds new energies. Do you agree on this?

Toyoda. When we are born, we come out of blood.

Quando nasciamo, usciamo dal sangue.

Blood rain and knives: real vs imaginary / Pioggia di sangue e coltelli: realtà vs imaginario

Question 9

Sonatine. Many of your films, the dimension of reality often transcends into imagination. These are extremely significant and fascinating moments that capture the viewer: for example, the knives falling from the sky in Pornostar, the strip-club appearance in 9 Souls, the blood rain in Hanging Garden, the ghosts of the dead family members in Monsters Club, Shottan sinking in mud in The Miracle, the journeys in the limbo and the resurrections of The Blood of Rebirth, etc. Do these scenes represent an escape from reality?

Toyoda. To me, reality sometimes looks that way. It’s like I’m in a fantasy all the time. So that kind of expression is real to me. It is not an escape from reality. It is reality itself.

Style, influences and directors / Stile, influenze e registi

Question 10

Sonatine. Which Eastern and Western directors were important for your education?

Toyoda. Stanley Kubrick. Akira Kurosawa. Nagisa Oshima. Kinji Fukasaku. Shintaro Katsu.

Stanley Kubrick. Akira Kurosawa. Nagisa Oshima. Kinji Fukasaku. Shintaro Katsu.

Question 11

Sonatine. In your films, there are some linguistic and stylistic choices that are constant: we think of the ralenti or the isolation of the character who crosses a crowd from which he is clearly “apart”, but also the use of the long shot and the telephoto lens, as in Pornstar that fossilizes and imprisons the characters in a false movement that does not seem to lead anywhere aside.

Toyoda. I like long shots and telephoto lenses. I am fascinated when I see them on a big movie screen. Expressions of solitude.

Mi piacciono i campi lunghi e i teleobiettivi.

Question 12

Sonatine. Two Western directors come to mind who made the opposite use of ralenti: for Sam Peckinpah it is closely linked to the violent and destructive effects on the body of a bullet that pierces the flesh; for Scorsese the ralenti has almost an erotic dimension, like stopping time to look at an object of desire, be it female or male; this is more like a guilty pleasure. Which of the two directors do you feel closest to?

Toyoda. Both became my passion as a teenager. I don’t know which is closer to which. But I think Scorsese has more influence on me. I love Mean Streets.

Adoro Mean Streets.

Question 13

Sonatine- The severed finger with the safety pin in the opening of The Day of Destruction reminds of David Lynch… What do you think of his cinema?

Il dito mozzato con la spilla da balia nell’incipit di The Day of Destruction fa pensare a David Lynch… che cosa ne pensi del suo cinema?

Toyoda. The music and sound effects are wonderful. I think Lynch is the director who established the world of sound design. He is my favorite director. The severed finger is something I have seen myself. So it is not Lynch’s influence.

“Keep the volume up”: on music / “Keep the volume up”: sulla musica

Question 14

Sonatine. Speaking of Wolf’s Calling you urged viewers to keep up the volume of music. Since Pornstar, with the musical group Dip, you have favored the use of a musical style close to grunge or post punk scene…  In The Day of Destruction the soundtrack, often harsh and hard enough, like the most extreme punk, is embodied by Gezan, a Japanese alternative rock band whose frontman, Man To The People, is also the interpreter of the disturbing character of Kenichi. At the same time, however, you resorted to the wind instrument and percussion music of the Seppuku Pistols in Wolf’s Calling, (who also play the peasants) The Day of Destruction and Go Seppuku (the so-called Resurrection Trilogy). How important is music in your cinema?

Toyoda. Like you, I love music. I listen to some music every day. I am often inspired by music. I like classic Japanese music like Seppuku Pistols. I also like punk bands. I also listen to techno and jazz. When I make old Japanese movies, music like Seppuku Pistols is suitable. And I share their philosophy. There used to be wolves in Japan, but they became extinct 100 years ago. It is for Japan to modernize. Their idea is to bring back the time when there were wolves. I sympathize with that idea. I myself play the drums in Seppuku Pistols, and we performed at the Dubai Expo in February.

Blue Spring 2.0: Crows Explode

Question 15

Sonatine. With Crows Explode you returned to the themes of youth violence, within the educational institution. It is almost a Blue Spring 2.0, superb in the use of décor, after the two previous works of Miike Takashi. Do you agree?

Toyoda. I heard it was made in reference to Blue Spring. The art is the same. I was offered the chance to direct Crows from the beginning. For a long time, I turned it down.

Question 16

Sonatine. The film was a great commercial success… the producer of the film, Yamamoto Mataichirô, is a big name in Japanese cinema, he was executive for Audition and for the two previous Crows, recently he produced two films of Sono Sion… Was this film also a turning point in your career?

Toyoda. When you’re number one at the box office, it’s easier to make movies; we needed to make a number one movie. I directed for that, of course, and it was a big hit.

Call to action: Wolf’s Calling and the resurrection trilogy / Call to action: Wolf’s Calling e la trilogia della resurrezione

Question 17

Sonatine. Wolf’s Calling is an independent and self-produced film, although it is surprising for the presence of an all-star cast that includes, among others, Asano Tadanobu (Ichi the Killer, by Miike Takashi), Matsuda Ryūhei (Tabu-Gohatto, by Ōshima Nagisa) and Shibukawa Kiyohiko (a constant presence of Toyoda cinema). The film shows the existence of an area of Japanese cinema that is not always inclined to mainstream and homologation. Do you feel like you are part of this trend?

Toyoda. I am the one who created this trend. But I am the only one.

Sono io che ho creato questa tendenza. Ma io sono l’unico.

Question 18

Sonatine. The Day of Destruction is also an independent film, written, directed, edited and produced through a crowfunding campaign. It should have been released on an absolutely special date for Japan, July 24th, 2020, first day of the Olympics, posponed due to Covid.

Toyoda. The Tokyo Olympics were postponed, but I made a film and released it. There was a lot of opposition. But I made a promise to the audience, and it is my way of life to keep my promises.

Question 19

Sonatine. “If you think you’re alive, prove it!” (Man To The People in The Day of Destruction).  In this phase of your career, it’s possible to grasp an ecological militancy, an awareness linked to the environment, to nature, a desire to shake the viewer, a call to action… Do you agree?

“Se pensi di essere vivo, dimostralo!” (Man To The People in The Day of Destruction).

Toyoda. All I can do is make movies. Everything is possible in a film.

Tutto quello che posso fare è fare film. Tutto è possibile in un film.

Question 20

Sonatine. Go Seppuku Yourselves is shot in hieratic ways: a careful composition of the shots, the sinuous movements of the camera, the music of the Seppuku Pistol, the direction of the actors. In this film the reference to the pandemic is very explicit…

Toyoda. It is a major source of anxiety in Japanese society as it is in the rest of the world. For me, it was necessary to look at this anxiety. If no one else was going to say it, I had to say it myself in the film.

Nouvelle Vague: Toyoda and the others / Nouvelle Vague: Toyoda e gli altri

Question 21

Sonatine. Do you feel like you were part of the authors who became the Nouvelle Vague of Japanese cinema of the nineties? Kitano Takeshi, Tsukamoto Shin’ya, Kurosawa Kiyoshi, Miike Takashi…

Toyoda. There is no such thing. But I can put my name on the list abroad. They are older than me. I wrote a script for Junji Sakamoto. Sakamoto is of the same generation as them. I like Sakamoto’s films.

The actors and the set  / Gli attori e il set

Question 22

Sonatine. During your career you have worked several times with the same actors, above all Shibukawa Kiyohiko who has played 9 films, from the first, Pornstar (1999) to the last, Shiver (2021). Matsuda Ryūhei is also a constant presence with 6 films. What is your relationship with the actors? How do you direct them?

Come li dirigi?

Toyoda. Kiyohiko Shibukawa has appeared in all my films. Except for Unchained. Shibukawa, Matsuda and Kubozuka are all great actors. There are no better actors in Japan. That’s why I always work with them. They are also great human beings. But I am always looking for new encounters. There are actors I would like to make a film with, but the timing is not right.

Kiyohiko Shibukawa è apparso in tutti i miei film. Tranne Unchained.

Question 23

Sonatine. There are directors who do not feel comfortable on the set, they put writing first, and arrive on the set with a strong script, while for others the set is like a “battlefield” in which to improvise, distort and question themselves … what approach do you favor?

Toyoda. Both. I write scripts every day. There is a lot of improvisation on set, and people say that my film set is tougher than a battlefield. Osamu Kikuchi, who shoots many of the stills for my films, is a war photographer

Ambedue. Scrivo sceneggiature ogni giorno.

Question 24

Sonatine. You have been a chess prodigy: do you think that this passion of yours, which is often also a mindset, helped you in your confrontation with cinema? Among other things, you dedicated a film, The Miracle of Crybaby Shottan (2018) to a shogi player…

Toyoda. I can’t always answer that question well. But Stanley Kubrick was also a chess player. A film director has to solve many problems at once. In that sense, it is exactly like chess.
